Long ago, at the dawn of the digital age, an international group of young programmers helped to lay the groundwork for what would one day become the internet. Unbeknownst to these young programmers, they were also unintentionally accessing the ancient and multidimensional supercomputer known as Yggdrasil. Their blind grasping into the digital realm and this powerful computer caused an unintentional side-effect; the creation of this dimension's Digital World.
The early Digital World was a wild and untamed place, and it was largely untouched for centuries of local time (little more than a decade in the real world), with only cursory and tangential brushes from these earliest programmers. Digital Empires were built, grew and fell with no direct influence from humanity. Warlords and their fiefdoms became the order of the day; until the programmers and their students finally brought the internet into its modern form for the first time.
One race of Digital World inhabitants, the self-titled Guardians of the Digital World, came into existence with the inception of true sentience in the Digital World. The Guardians saw opportunity in this new Paradigm. Many of the Digital Warlords only grew in strength with their new found intellect, but their subjects became increasingly restless in the aftermath. It was from this restlessness that the Guardians saw hope, but hope must be tempered and directed to be truly effective. To this end, the Guardians reached out through the newly formed Web and found ten promising young people; many connected to the same digital pioneers in the real world. They created the first Digital Devices, or Digivices, to act as conduits of power and control between these chosen individuals and newly created Digieggs. In each egg, the Guardians saw hope and they exerted all their available power to send the Digivices to these chosen individuals, thus calling the first of the Digidestined.
These children, the Proto-Digidestined, arrived in a Digital World that was growing ever darker under the sway of the Digital Warlords, and through gentle coaching from the Guardians and their leader Gennai, they knew their task was the liberation of the Digital World.
Unfortunately, these children were inexperienced and poorly prepared for such a monumental task. Under the leadership of their de facto leaders, Ryo and Lilah, they had little hope. They struggled for months to exact change and to wrest control from the Warlords, with little effect. That is, until the idea of using deception and guile to turn the Warlords against each other arose. Through carefully planned raids and well placed words of insurrection, the Proto-Digidestined succeeded in breaking the fragile and volatile truces between the Warlords. This single act seemed to work. Open warfare erupted across the Digital World and great swaths of territory was liberated in the chaos. Unfortunately, the Proto-Digidestined had revealed their inexperience, as they were not prepared for the long term effects.
Digimon turned on Digimon as the newly liberated Digimon found themselves having to fight for their lives against the increasingly desperate Warlords. Civil War was threatening to tear the Digital World apart. Warlords against Warlords, Free Digimon against those still enslaved, and the Digidestined caught in the middle all found themselves fighting a war that all sides knew could only end in mutual destruction. The Guardians saw their grand experiment failing and began to prepare a contingency for the now inevitable loss of the their chosen warriors, and the Digidestined found themselves abandoned by their mentors in their darkest hour.
The Digidestined saw no other recourse than to escape. They fled to the Guardians' stronghold, supported by a small army of liberated Digimon, with hopes to seize control of the only known portal to the Physical World. Sadly, they found that many of the Warlords had reached a similar conclusion and a massive battle broke out between all three sides. The Proto-Digidestined succeeded in claiming the portal, but brought the battle with them. As Digimon clashed, some few stumbled through the portal and the battles continued in the streets of the physical world. The Proto-Digidestined knew the cause was lost and they could not risk the portal remaining stable long enough for them to escape. The portal had to be closed and the Digidestined had to hold the line until it finally closed for good; it was an act of selflessness, as they knew that there was no hope that they could escape before it close, at least without more destructive fighting spilling into the physical world. However Lilah, in a final act of compassion, pushed the youngest of the Digidestined, Ken Ichijouji, through the collapsing portal in an effort to save him from the chaotic and destructive aftermath of this terrible war.
With the portal gone, seemingly sealed forever, the combatants turned on each other with renewed malice. The Digidestined fought their hardest, but were forced to watch as their Digimon were struck down, one by one. The last of the Warlords fell or retreated to their ancient strongholds. The Guardians remained behind to finish laying the groundwork for a new batch of Digidestined.
In the shattered ruins of a once great city, the remaining Digidestined gathered around a fire for a final meeting. They sat in silence for a long time, quietly mourning the mess they had made of the Digital World and the loss of their beloved Digimon. Then, one by one, they departed from the fire; some with sorrowful final words, some with words of hatred and malice, and some without so much of a word. Lilah was the last to depart, poking at the cooling embers with quiet resignation. Thus, the Proto-Digidestined were scattered and broken, left to find a way to survive amongst the ruins of their work.
In the meantime, the Guardians plans finally came to fruition. A new group of Digidestined were called, and despite the intervention of a new group of Warlords built from the scattered and corrupted data of the fallen Digidestined Digimon, the new Digidestined came to right the wrongs of their predecessors.
The new Digidestined succeeded in defeating the last of Warlords and eventually bested the Dark Masters, thus finally purifying and liberating the data of these first chosen Digimon. The Digital World was finally reaching the state of peace and stability that the Guardians had so long dreamed. They had succeeded in reformatting the Digital World into a tamer and less ruinous place. In doing so, they also lead to the rebirth and return of the Digimon to the Proto-Digidestined, thus fomenting a new resolved in the scattered Digidestined. Lilah took this as a sign and she began to seek out her scattered compatriots, all the while spreading word of their return to the Digimon who still remembered her Digidestined. The returned Proto-Digidestined inspired the growth of an almost cult-like following growing amongst the free Digimon of the Digital world, thus the Church of the Coming Dawn was born.
As Lilah traveled the Digital World and was inadvertently growing the cult of hope that followed her, another of the Proto-Digidestined had other plans. Ken had found his way back to the Digital World for the first time since his traumatic ejection from it. His young and damaged mind, manipulated by other forces from the past, had only the faintest of scattered memories of his time with Lilah and her band. This traumatic amnesia left him with nothing but malice and detachment from the Digital World and its inhabitants, convincing him that the world was little more than a playground for him to play his cruel games. Thus, the Digimon Emperor came to rule large swaths of territory, subconsciously following in the footsteps of the cruel Warlords he had once railed against.
Gennai, having learned much from his first forays with Digidestined, called yet another group to combat the growing threat of the returning Proto-Digidestined. He remained distant, moreso than he had with either previous group, hoping that the purity and hope of the two returning members (TK and Kari) would be enough to unite and drive this new group of young warriors. And, it seemed to work. Ken was eventually overcome with his own cruelty and foolishness, and the Digidestined prevailed, toppling the Digimon Emperor and bringing Ken's scattered memories back to the surface. The shock of his dark and terrible memories had driven him into a comatose state; a state from which he is only just recovering.
However, the greater threat still remains. Lilah is closing in on her scattered companions and her cult-like followers are spreading. There are few corners of the Digital World that remain untouched by the chilling mantra of, “Prepare yourself for the coming reformat! A new Dawn is coming and it will wash away the darkness of this world of Dusk! Put your faith in the return of the First Ones!”
These newest Digidestined are now faced with a dual-edged danger. On one side, the effects of the Digimon Emperor's strongholds are giving rise to dangerous new threats as some malicious Digimon are seeking to fill the vacuum left from his departure. On the other side, the Proto-Digidestined are returning. They have learned little in the time they have spent apart, except to embrace the darkness in their hearts and activating the dark reflections of their powerful crests. They have embraced the Digital World and its most savage ways, even finding ways to circumvent the restrictions of their human forms; they have become as much digital as physical and that has allowed them to battle alongside their newly returned Digimon in a way never before seen.
And beneath all of this, unbeknownst to all, there are agents of Dark Destiny that is reaching out from the past, seeking vengeance upon them all...
